The Truth About Olive Oil

A lot of people believe olive oil is good for you, and why wouldn’t they? It’s all over the media on how it protects heart disease among other health promoting qualities. But let’s look at the facts…

Olive oil is the most calorically-dense food out there. It starts as a whole olive and then removes all the fiber, vitamins and antioxidants, leaving just pure fat. It is 100% fat. No nutritional value. It’s like adding sugar to anything, you’re only adding empty calories with no nutrients, along with all the other ingredients to clog your arteries resulting in heart disease.

The Mediterranean diet gained a lot of popularity which includes olive oil as “an important source for monounsaturated fat”.

There were two control groups in the study on the Mediterranean diet. One group consumed about 3% more monounsaturated fat (from olive oil) and the other group ate a diet that was similar to what Americans ate which was high in saturated fat. When comparing the two, the first group had “striking” results showing they were about 50-70% less likely to suffer any heart disease compared to the control group. What the media didn’t report however, is that at the end of the study (just four years later) 25% of the participants in the first group had either died or experienced some cardiac event. That’s 1 in 4 people from that group who had heart disease from this “healthy diet”. Of course it’s going to look healthy when comparing it to a diet that is higher in fat. That’s like comparing McDonald’s chicken sandwich to Burger King’s chicken tenders. The sandwich has lettuce on it so it must be healthier, right?!?

You can get healthy fats from nuts, seeds and avocados, however they’re still fat so if you’re trying to lose weight then limit these foods. Also, any diet high in fat whether it’s the good kind or bad kind can still put your body into overload. Eat these foods sparingly.

In most cases, the first signs of heart disease is sudden death. If you want to avoid this (which I’m sure you do) oil should be one of the first things to remove from your diet.
Use a little bit of water or broth instead of oil when sautéing.
